Fire Tip for November

HAPPY HOLIDAYS from your friends and neighbors at the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department, wishing you all the best during this most joyous season.

With everything going on during this month we ask you and your loved ones to take a moment to remember some important holiday safety tips.

v     Out and About and Parties

Remember there will be more people on the road during this season and we encourage you to be aware of your surroundings. If you are out at holiday parties, please do not drink and drive. A designated driver or calling a taxi is a good idea.

Be sure to check the cushions on the couch and other furniture after any holiday parties for any accidental cigars or cigarettes that may have been dropped. (Besides you can pick up some extra change).

v     Cooking

Do not leave items cooking on the stove or in the oven alone. If you must leave to answer the door, phones, or go somewhere such as the store, turn the heat off. (See more tips in Kitchen Fire Safety)

v     Selecting Decorations and Caring for Your Christmas Tree

Trees

If you have chosen to use a live tree, needles should be green and hard to pull out and the branches should not break easily. Make sure to water your tree and keep it away from any heat sources (at least 3 feet), as it will tend to dry the tree out. Two weeks is a good time frame for a real tree.

If you pick an artificial tree be sure it is flame retardant. Make sure your tree has a sturdy stand and will not fall over.

Decorations

Use flame retardant or non-flammable decorations and be sure they are away from heat sources. If using candles, never use them on your tree and make sure you never leave them unattended. (See more tips in Candle Safety)

Lights

Be sure you check your Christmas lights for any worn or damaged cords. Follow the proper instructions for indoor and outdoor use. Unplug Christmas lights in your home while you are gone or sleeping. Do not over-load the light strands or electrical outlets. Most strands recommend only two strands of lights to be connected together. Use a reflector or heat shield type of light strand for larger tree light bulbs and do not leave the light bulbs bare. Try not to have long extension cord runs on tree lights.

v     Fireworks

Play it safe with fireworks let professionals handle them, never children. DO NOT SHOOT GUNS INTO THE AIR. (See more tips in Firework Safety).

Remember to check your smoke detectors and practice your fire drills at home.

Our warmest wishes hoping you will be safe and have a happy holiday and celebrated New Year.

Happy Holidays, and best wishes from the AVFD
