Candle Safety
For many centuries wax
candles have been used in the practice of aromatherapy and to generate
light. In recent years the dramatic increase in the popularity of
candles has been accompanied by a significant rise in the number of
fires and fire-related fatalities throughout the United States. Recent statistics from
the National Fire Protection Association indicate that fires ignited by
candles account for 2.4 percent of all fires, resulting in 6 percent of
all fire-related injuries and 3 percent of all fire-related deaths. As a
result of the large numbers of fires due to improper use of candles –
at the national level and within the local community - the Atascocita
Volunteer Fire Department has recognized the need to educate our
residents in proper handling of candles. In 1998, “the Candle
Circle of Safety” was developed by a Candle Safety Committee for the
purpose of educating the public on safe practices in candle use.
